THE FESTIVAL OF COLORS

We’ll travel across northern India to experience one of the most vibrant celebrations on the planet: the Holi Festival in Mathura and Varanasi.

Summary

Faith and devotion

The Holi Festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is a symbolic celebration of the triumph of good over evil, renewal, joy, and unity among people.

During this expedition, we’ll have the opportunity to experience the most important and crowded edition of the festival in the city of Mathura, as well as a smaller and more peculiar version of it in the sacred enclave of Varanasi. There, we’ll witness the faith of the sadhus and aghoris—also known as “the cannibals of the Ganges”—and gain a deeper understanding of Hindu funeral rites, which include the cremation of the deceased on the banks of the Ganges River that runs through the city. To conclude our journey, we’ll stop in the city of Agra and enjoy the eternal beauty of the Taj Mahal.

Country of origin — Varanasi

Welcome! After landing, we’ll meet at the hotel and then head out to explore the streets of one of our favorite cities in the world: Varanasi, also known as Benares. Here, in the most sacred city of Hinduism, we’ll have an unforgettable first impression of the Indian subcontinent and, above all, the chance to understand the deep influence of religion on the daily lives of its people. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a delicious rooftop dinner as we get ready to begin our adventure.

Day 02, 03, 04 [FEBRUARY 26 / 27 / 28, 2026]

Varanasi - Sarnath and Masan Holi

Over these three days, we’ll explore bazaars and temples, discovering some of the most fascinating places in Varanasi and allowing ourselves to be swept along by the constant flow of unexpected events that unfold throughout the city. We’ll witness the evening fire ceremonies, sail along the Ganges by boat, learn about the unique beliefs of the aghoris, known as the cannibals of the Ganges, and observe the mesmerizing funeral rites that take place at the Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats.

We’ll also visit Sarnath, a pilgrimage site for Buddhist monks where Buddha delivered his first sermon, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of another of the major religions in this part of the world: Buddhism.

On the 28th, according to official sources, the Masan Holi will be celebrated. This is a little-known version of the Holi festival, held at the burning ghats of Varanasi, where colors are replaced by the ashes of the cremated, and locals dance in a trance-like state. It will be a truly unique occasion, with Indian techno music, where we’ll experience India in all its splendor.
