In the heart of Central Asia

During this expedition, we’ll learn more about Afghanistan’s vibrant past and its complex present reality.

Summary

From the Silk Road to the present day

We’ll delve into Afghanistan’s main cities to learn more about the culture and heritage of a country that has stood for centuries at an exceptional crossroads of civilizations. From the legendary Silk Road to its significance during the hippie movement of the 1960s, Afghanistan has long been a unique center of cultural and religious exchange.‍

In addition, we’ll witness the challenges the country faces as a result of the many conflicts it has endured over the past decades, and we’ll gain first-hand insight into how Afghan men and women continue to shape their identities within a complex and ever-changing context. Our focus will be on engaging with the country’s diverse ethnic groups, such as the Hazaras and Pashtuns, and learning about their stories of resilience and survival.

(01)

Local life

Classic itineraries through Afghanistan usually focus on visiting monuments. However, our priority on this expedition is to understand how Afghans live today, to get closer to local life and, as much as possible, share daily experiences with the people. That’s why we’ll venture into rural areas, where local communities maintain their traditional way of life. We’ll experience the customs and traditions of the villages up close and take part in their everyday activities.
(02)

One country, two realities

Afghanistan is a country marked by strong gender segregation. Men and women fulfill different roles and occupy separate spaces. To fully understand both perspectives, we’re fortunate to have two expedition leaders, Luis and Amarna, who will guide us through a deep and respectful exploration of each of these realities.

Unique opportunity

This expedition offers us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore a country that has been closed to tourism for decades. Today, Afghanistan receives very few foreign visitors, so we’ll have the privilege of traveling through iconic cities such as Kabul, Herat, and Kandahar, connecting with the warmth and generosity of the locals, and witnessing this unique moment in the country’s history.

Day 01 [APRIL 11, 2026].

Country of origin — Kabul

Welcome to Kabul! We’ll dedicate this first day to getting acclimated to the city. We’ll pick you up at the airport and, depending on the arrival time, we may take an introductory tour. We’ll visit a tailor to get traditional Afghan clothing and exchange some money for the local currency.

We’ll also take a stroll through Kabul, including Bibi Mahro Hill, from where we’ll enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city. In addition, we’ll explore the Mandawi Market, a lively and unique place, home to the famous bird bazaar. In the evening, we’ll have dinner at a delicious local restaurant to officially begin this wonderful adventure.

Day 02 [APRIL 12, 2026].

Kabul

We’ll spend this full day in Kabul immersing ourselves in its history and culture. We’ll explore some of its most emblematic sites, wandering through bazaars and mosques. We’ll also visit the spectacular cemetery next to the Rawza Sakhi Shah-e mosque, where we’ll meet people from the Hazara ethnic group, the country’s Shia minority. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Habib, the last street photographer of Kabul, who captures his images with a traditional box camera. Those who wish can take home an unforgettable souvenir by posing for this remarkable artist.

Day 03 [APRIL 13, 2026].

Kabul — Kandahar

We’ll leave Kabul early in the morning and head toward Kandahar, enjoying a journey through traditional Afghan villages with houses made of mud and adobe. We’ll stop for lunch and, if we’re lucky, meet some of the nomadic people who live in this region. Having opened to tourism only three years ago, the country welcomes foreigners with curiosity, looks of surprise, and great hospitality. Along the way, we’ll witness the challenges and lack of infrastructure left by the war; we’ll have to navigate damaged roads by taking secondary routes, which will make our arrival take longer than usual.

Day 04 [APRIL 14, 2026].

Kandahar

A full day to explore the city of Kandahar, referred to by some media as “the stronghold of the Taliban.” In this city, we’ll need to be especially mindful of etiquette, as its inhabitants follow the most conservative branches of Islam. We’ll visit the iconic Mosque of the Cloak of the Prophet Muhammad, the tomb of Ahmad Shah Durrani, the tomb of Mirwais Khan Hotak, and the Chilzina complex. We’ll end the day with a walk through the city’s old bazaar, where we’ll gain a deeper understanding of local life and the atmosphere of Kandahar.

Day 05 [APRIL 15, 2026].

Kandahar — Herat

We’ll wake up early to begin our journey to Herat, making stops in various villages and local homes along the way. We’ll pause for lunch and take time to enjoy the landscapes. We’ll arrive in Herat by nightfall.

Day 06 [APRIL 16, 2026].

Herat

Today we’ll explore the streets of Herat, one of Afghanistan’s historical gems. We’ll begin at the Citadel of Alexander the Great, wander through the old town, and visit the Great Mosque, the Musallah Complex, and the Shrine of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari. Throughout the day, we’ll enjoy the renowned hospitality of the Afghan people, remaining open to every opportunity to share a cup of tea and engage in conversations about their country, way of life, and culture.

Day 07, 08, 09 [APRIL 17 / 18 / 19, 2026].

Herat — Kabul — Bamyan

We’ll fly back to Kabul and, if the schedule allows, continue directly to Bamyan to begin exploring the eastern part of the country the following day. Over the next few days, we’ll visit the Bamyan complex, the ruins of the ancient city of Gholghula, and the Dragon Valley (Dara e Azhder). Here, we’ll meet many people from the Hazara ethnic group and learn more about their current situation. In the city’s market, we’ll notice a curious feature: women running the shops. It will be a great opportunity to buy gifts and souvenirs. Bamyan is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in this part of the world.

The following day, we’ll head to the caves scattered across the mountains of the region to meet some of the ethnic groups who have built their homes there. We’ll listen to their stories, learn about their way of life, and spend as much time with them as possible. In the evening, we’ll return to our hotel in Bamyan.

Day 10 [APRIL 20, 2026].

Bamyan — Chilburj

Early in the morning, we’ll head to Chilburj, where we’ll spend the day immersed in rural Afghan life. We’ll have lunch with local people, who will invite us to take part in some of their daily activities, such as baking bread and milking cows. These villages, having had very little contact with foreign cultures, uniquely preserve the essence of their ancient traditions.

Day 11, 12 [APRIL 21 / 22, 2026]

Chilburj — Kabul — Country of origin

We’ll leave early in the morning toward Kabul on a road trip that will allow us to enjoy the region’s stunning mountain landscapes. We’ll arrive in Kabul by late afternoon and head out for one last (and wonderful) dinner, reminiscing about everything we’ve experienced and learned in this country. The following day, we’ll say our goodbyes with warm hugs, taking with us the unforgettable memories of this incredible journey. Until the next adventure!
